The structure of TATAMI

This article explains the structure of tatami, a flooring unique to Japan.

Tatami can be broadly categorized into three parts: the surface layer called 'tatami omote,' the decorative edge attached at the perimeter known as 'tatami beri,' and the foundational part called 'tatami doko.'

TATAMI-Omote

The 'tatami omote' is the top surface layer of the tatami, which is the first layer encountered.

The material used for the tatami omote is a natural substance called 'igusa,' known for being gentle on the human body.

The tatami omote is crafted by weaving igusa with hemp or cotton threads, creating small irregularities on the surface. When walking barefoot on tatami, these irregularities provide gentle stimuli to the soles of the feet, enhancing brain activation.

TATAMI-Beri

Tatami beri refers to the decorative edge placed around the perimeter of tatami, typically sandwiched between the tatami omote and used to emphasize aesthetic design and the boundary with the floor.

In the past, the pattern of tatami beri symbolized a person's social status, but nowadays, one can choose from a variety of designs. By selecting a tatami beri that suits the room's ambiance, you can enjoy the design aspect of tatami, adding to its allure.

TATAMI-Doko

The tatami doko forms the foundation of tatami, typically serving as a wooden framework or base to support the tatami omote.

The traditional tatami doko, utilized since ancient times, is made by compressing straw from 40cm to 5cm in thickness, resulting in exceptional durability and providing the distinctive soft texture characteristic of tatami underfoot.

However, in recent times, urethane foam and wooden materials have become the mainstream for tatami yuka. While straw tatami doko weighs around 30 kilograms per piece, modern alternatives weigh approximately half as much. To acquire tatami at a lower cost from overseas, one can opt for these synthetic tatami doko options, reducing transportation expenses.

In this article, we have explained the structure of tatami. Understanding the construction of tatami allows you to manage the cost of purchasing tatami and enables you to select your own customized tatami design.

At SENCHO JAPONISM, we aim to share information about tatami to encourage everyone worldwide to easily incorporate tatami into their lives.
